So, today we're going to learn how to say it's funny in Korean and you will use it every time when you see something really funny.

How To Say It's Funny in Korean

Basic form : 웃기다
반말(informal non-honorific) form : 웃겨
Negative form with 해요 speech style : 안웃겨요
It's same to 'to be funny' or 'to be hilarious' in English. 웃기다 is an unique word that be can a verb and an adjective at same time. If you put an object in a sentence, then 웃기다 becomes a verb (to make someone laugh). If you don't put an object in a sentence, then 웃기다 becomes an adjective (to be funny).
Funny vs Make Someone Laugh
웃기다 means 'to be funny' and 'to make someone laugh' at same time. Well… It makes sense because if something is funny enough, then people laugh. So 웃기다 actually is something really funny enough to make you laugh.

In A Negative Meaning
웃기다 has a bit negative nuance sometimes. It's perfectly okay when you use 웃기다 to say 'something is funny'. However, 'someone is funny' can be very rude sometimes. Native Koreans say '웃기는 사람이네' to insult others. It's like 'he is so ridiculous or stupid enough to make me laugh'.

웃기다 vs 재미있다
웃기다 and 재미있다 are similar and different at same time. 웃기다 means 'to be funny' or 'to make someone laugh' and 재미있다 means fun, joyful and funny. Unlike 웃기다 can be used a verb, 재미있다 can be used only as an adjective. Also, 재미있다 can mean 'interesting' for person.
